this hour forward
this hour forward
An immersive performance installation exploring marriage, family, and identity in a time of shifting cultural expectations in the U.S. Using original video projections, sound, photography, and storytelling, Ryan Conarro urgently counts the days until a wedding that’s not his own. Always-the-wedding-singer-never-the-bride, he dances from tuxedo, into gown, into playful places between. Voiceover stories of childhood memories weave with torch songs of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Vicki Carr; voices of psychologists and gender theorists collide with the latest headlines in LGBTQ equality rights. It all adds up to a participatory exploration of losing, winning, and loving.
Created in residencies at Goddard College Interdisciplinary Arts Program; the Juneau Arts & Culture Center Gallery; and the Gainesville Theatre Alliance.
Presented at the JACC Gallery (Juneau, AK) 2013; the Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GA) 2014; the Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon (OR) 2014; the Stonington Opera House (ME 2014); Goddard College (WA) 2015; and the Performance Project at University Settlement (NYC) 2015.
